Berniece V Hershberger Obituary (1922

In Loving Memory OfBerniece V. Hershberger A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Milford Mennonite Church with Pastor Tim Springer officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 1-9pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Milford with the family greeting relatives and friends from 5-7 pm. There will be no visitation prior to service on Saturday. Private Burial was at Milford Mennonite Cemetery prior to service on Saturday. Memorials have been established to Milford Mennonite Church. Pallbearers are: Gabriel, Justin, Todd, and Tyran Stutzman, Jeff Troyer and Austin Zechmann. Berniece Vivian Hershberger was born January 29, 1922, on a farm southwest of Milford, Nebraska to William & Jemima (Stutzman) Burkey, the 5th of 7 children and passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Sunrise Country Manor, rural Milford, at the age of 95. As a young girl, she attended country school #25 near Milford. Berniece was a member of Milford Mennonite Church and served her church in many ways. On January 14, 1945, she was united in marriage to Floyd Stutzman at West Fairview Mennonite Church and to this union six children were born: Virginia, Gene, Marilyn, Gary, Arnie and Floyd, Jr. Berniece was a loving wife and mother and helped raise her family on the farm near Cairo, Nebraska until 1964, when they moved to Milford. She helped Floyd at the Conoco Gas Station near the Seward interchange until his untimely death in 1976, as well as taking care of her parents in their final days. Berniece had a serving heart and over the years she provided assistance to many elderly who wanted to stay in their homes as long as possible by cooking, cleaning and sometimes staying with them to give in-home assistance. Berniece also gave many hours of voluntary services to the elderly living in LaJunta, CO and at Lakewood Retreat in Florida where she assisted in the kitchen, cooking and setting up the dining room.Berniece was blessed with a second marriage to Harlan Hershberger on June 12, 1999. Together they enjoyed visiting friends, playing cards and traveling to various places. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing quilts, especially those requested by her family. She was an avid reader, spending many enjoyable hours studying her bible, and reading Christian novels. Berniece loved the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well known for her excellent cooking, and if someone had a desire to go "out to eat", they just stopped in at grandmas for an excellent meal. Berniece enjoyed planning cooking events, whether it was canning and freezing the produce from her garden or dressing chickens, getting them ready to can or freeze. All the mess was always at her house. Whenever a family had a "need" Mom was always there, whether it was for a new baby or caring for someone who was sick.Berniece is survived by her children and spouses, Virginia and Rod Troyer, Cape Coral, FL, Gene and Diane Stutzman, Lincoln, Marilyn Martin, Alva, FL, Gary and Joan Stutzman, Seward, Arnie Stutzman, Pleasant Dale and Floyd and Janet Stutzman, Pleasant Dale; 20 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Gamble, Milford; many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, Floyd in 1976 and Harlan in 2015; a grandson, Zachary Blowers in 2008; brothers, Milton, Wayne and Darold Burkey; sisters, Vi Schlegel and Florence Hershberger; and a son-in-law, Wayne Martin.
