In Memory of Doris L. Yokel A Private Funeral Service was held Sunday, January 14, 2018, at the Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend with Pastor Dave Coleman officiating. Interment was in the Andrew Cemetery, Friend. Memorials have been established to the Alzheimer's Association. There was a Memorial Celebration of Life held later on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ with Pastor Dave Coleman officiating. An Order of Eastern Star service by the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 199 Utica was also done at the Memorial Service. Doris L. Yokel, of David City, formerly of Friend, was born August 7, 1935 in Ainsworth, Nebraska to H. Gail and Ruth E. (Honaker) Lewis, the fourth of five children, and went to her heavenly home Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at St. Joseph's Villa in David City at the age of 82. As a young girl, she attended school in Omaha and graduated from North High School. Doris went to work immediately following high school as a bookkeeper at the Wright and Wilhelmy Company in Omaha and that is where she met the love of her life, Wayne W. Yokel. They were united in marriage on December 1, 1957, and they made their home in Friend. To this union, the couple was blessed with four children: Sarah, Diane, William and Jana. Doris was a dedicated daughter, sister, wife, and a wonderful mother and friend. She was also a helpmate to Wayne in the operation of the family business - Yokel's Hardware and Furniture, serving as the company bookkeeper. Doris was very skilled at shorthand, which expedited record keeping for the business. As she raised her children, Doris always was nurturing and encouraged them in their educational pursuits. After her children were grown and married, she was blessed with grandchildren, who adored her and Doris loved watching them grow. In July of 2007, the Yokel's celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the United Church of Christ with over 350 family and friends in attendance. Doris was a member of the Friend United Church of Christ, the Women's Fellowship (Rachel Circle) and served her church in many ways. She taught bible school when her children were young, encouraging her children to be active members and supporters of their church. Along with Wayne, Doris was a sponsor for the church youth group which their children attended. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star Rose Standish Chapter #265 in Friend where she served in numerous positions. Doris received the 50-year pins from both her church and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, watching movies and writing poetry. Her poems were frequently requested for special occasions and celebrations of friends, neighbors and family. Doris is survived by her children and spouses, Sarah Yokel, Friend, Diane and Michael Lewis, West Des Moines, IA, William "Will" and Sherryl Yokel, Friend, and Jana Yokel, David City, six grandchildren and spouse, Andrew Lewis and his wife, Allison, Jonathan, Peter & Katherine Lewis, all of West Des Moines, IA, Emily and William Yokel, Friend, brother, Standley Lewis, St. Cloud, MN, sister-in-law, Marian Sims, Lincoln, many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Doris was preceded in death by husband, Wayne in 2007, her parents, Homer and Ruth Lewis, two sisters, Elizabeth and Marguarite, a brother, Herbert, parents-in-law, William and Eunice Yokel, and a brother-in-law, Larry Sims. There was also a Memorial Service at United Church of Christ on Sunday, January 28, 2018.
