Duane K. Matthies Obituary (1938

In Memory OfDUANE K. MATTHIESDuane Keith Matthies, of Friend, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 13 days. He was born May 13, 1938 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Charles Grant and Jessielee (Freeberg) Matthies, the youngest of two children. After Duane graduated with the Class of 1956 from Salt Lake City Olympus High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a biomedical tech for 22 years retiring in Bangkok in 1976. During his time in the service he met Sandra Kinkle and they were united in marriage on August 14, 1959 at Tooele, UT and to this union a daughter, Heather, and a son, Luther, were born. Together, Duane and Sandy made their home in several communities both stateside and overseas. After his retirement from the army, Duane was employed at Patterson Dental in Lincoln as a technician and he traveled across Nebraska repairing equipment. He retired in 1998 and enjoyed working on his house and visiting with various community members. Duane enjoyed making people laugh. He also enjoyed collecting stamps, coins and displaying various items and pictures relating to ships. Duane was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cordova. Duane is survived by his wife, Sandra Matthies, Friend, daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Martin Cawthra, Lincoln, son and daughter-in-law, Luther and Candice Matthies, San Leon, TX, two grandchildren, Sabrina and Tristan Cawthra, Lincoln, brother, Charles Matthies, Grants Pass, OR, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, DUE TO A BLIZZARD, The Funeral was postponed to:A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cordova with Rev. Arnold H. Jurchen officiating. Interment is in Zastrow Cemetery, Cordova with Military Services conducted by American Legion Ford-Banka Post #183. Memorials are directed in care of the family. Velma Lutz, organist, accompanied the congregation as they sang "A Mighty Fortress Is My God" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers are Steve Scholl, Ronald Styskal, Ray Hulse, Roy Bulwan, Roger Hanneman and Kevin Hulse.
