In Memory Of Esther M. (Sunneberg) Van Gundy A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing with Fr. Maurice Current officiating. Esther's wishes were that everyone wear their "Sunday best" when attending her services. A Rosary will be held prior to the Mass on Saturday at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart. Visitation will be Friday noon - 8 pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend and from 9 am until service time Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Beaver Crossing. Memorials have been established to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Salvation Army, Beaver Crossing Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Esther Marie (Sunneberg) Van Gundy was born April 5, 1924, on a farm near St. Bridget Church and close to Axtell, Kansas, to Clem and Marie (Mitchell) Sunneberg, the oldest of 12 children. She passed away suddenly Saturday, December 3, 2016 at her home in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska at the age of 92. As a young girl, Esther attended St. Bridget's Parochial grade school where she was privileged to stay with the nuns for her first year of school. Esther graduated from Saints Peter and Paul High School in Seneca, Kansas. Upon graduation, she was employed in Mead, Nebraska at the ordinance plant. Esther later worked at the Stop Nut Manufacturing and Elgin Watch Company, both of Lincoln. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Alfred "Al" O. Van Gundy, on August 24, 1946 after Al returned from his service during WWII in Lincoln and they celebrated 61 years of marriage prior to Al's death in 2007. To this union three children, Michael, Terry and Janel were born. Together they made their home in Lincoln where Esther was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church, the Altar Society, sang in the choir and participated in the weekly holy hour. She was also a member of the Home school association and was an auxiliary member of Junior Chamber of Commerce. Esther was a Cub Scout den mother and worked part time as a librarian at St. Teresa School. Esther and Al were busy parents raising their children with a strong work ethic. Esther was an avid antique collector, especially of dolls and Victorian Christmas items. She loved attending auctions, and checking out all the local area garage and tag sales. In 1977 they moved to Beaver Crossing, where she later faithfully attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She is survived by her children and spouses, Michael and Peggy Van Gundy, St. Louis, MO, Terry and Lorry Van Gundy, Auburn, Janel and Lenny Monroe, Lincoln, nine grandchildren and spouses, Justin and Jennifer Van Gundy, Overland Park, KS, Alison and Dr. Joshua Nadaud, St. Louis, MO, Emily and Ben Stockwell, St Louis, MO, Staci and Joe Edgington, Seward, Brook Van Gundy, Sioux Falls, SD, Hannah Van Gundy and Terry Jones, both of Brownville, Summer and Aaron Wells, St. Paul, Bryson and Kendra Monroe, Lincoln, Brianne and Justin Hladky, Lincoln, 17 great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Elsie Sunneberg, Pawnee City, Regis and Jane Sunneberg, Topeka, KS, sisters and brothers-in-law, Norene and Gene Lackey, Lincoln, Gerva Sunneberg, Topeka, KS, Alberta and Gene Carpenter, Plattsmouth, Janice and Jerry Heinen, Topeka, KS, sisters-in-law, Marie Sunneberg, Pawnee City, , many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Al in 2007, brothers, Gerald and Bob Sunneberg, and sisters, Rosie Whitmer and Joan Lackey and an infant sister, Bernita.
