As a young boy, he attended St. James Catholic grade school and graduated from Crete High School with the class of 1959. He began a life-time career of farming with his father. Together they made their home originally on a farm near Crete and later moved to the farm north of Dorchester. Farming and agriculture was a life-long passion and he had a knack working with animals to get them to do his bidding. He also was employed for several employers including, Wanek's of Crete, Farmland Industries, Crete Mill. Gene was later employed as a bus driver and janitor at Crete Elementary Public School. He truly enjoyed working with the kids. And last, but not least, Gene did maintenance work at Carriage Glenn Retirement Center in Lincoln. He had a gentle soul, but he loved to tease.
