Gladys M. Sporhase was born June 22, 1918, at home, in Syracuse, Nebraska, to Louis and Sophia Sporhase, the 2nd of four children, and passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at Crestview Care Center in Milford, NE, at the age of 96 years 3 months and 9 days.
Gladys attended Maple Grove School, District 38, in Otoe County, Nebraska, until the 8th grade. She always wanted a high school diploma so in her 50's she attended classes and finally got her wish and graduated with a GED.
On November 16, 1938, she was united in marriage to Arnold Helm. They farmed until 1945 near Talmage, then moved to Milford. To this union, five children: Carol, Robert, Coral, Carolyn and Coralee were born.
Gladys was a busy mother in addition to later becoming Arnold's contract painter. Being just a little gal, she could paint rings around anyone. She enjoyed working in her yard, which was always as immaculate as her house. You would often see her out in the yard picking up sticks and raking stray leaves. Gladys was an excellent cook and well-known for the many cookies she loved to bake. Her family has published a cookbook filled with special foods she made for them such as: sugar dumplings, filled noodles, homemade cheese, knip, bread and rolls. She also made homemade soap, which she used in her wringer washer.
Survivors include her children: Carol (Bill) Luther, Kilgore, NE; Bob (Gladys) Helm, Lincoln, NE; Coral Eberspacher, Milford, NE; Carolyn (LeRoy) Semin, Kilgore, NE; Dale Hauder, Milford, NE; grandchildren - Kay Urbigkit, Gregg and Mark Luther, Scott and Doug Helm, Todd and Troy Eberspacher, Michele and Shawn Semin, Tim and Chris Hauder and Cyndi Torell; 22 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold, in 1998; daughter, Coralee in 2006; granddaughter, Mary Eberspacher in 1963; son-in-law, David Eberspacher in 2001; great-grandson, Andrew Edward Helm; three brothers, Joy, Ray and Harvey.
She was loved and respected by her family and by those who called her friend. She will be greatly missed.
