Irene Anna Engel Obituary (1916

In Memory ofIrene A. EngelIrene Anna Engel, of Omaha, formerly of Friend, died Thursday, December 18, 2003, at her home in Omaha at the age of 87 years 6 months and 28 days. She was born May 21, 1916 in Friend to Arthur and Anna (Kara) Gibson, the 3rd of four children. As a young girl she attended school in Friend and graduated from Friend High School with the class of 1935. On September 4, 1939, Irene was united in marriage to Wesley Engel and to this union three children, Arvon, Dale and Sharon were born. Together they lived in Friend where Irene was a busy homemaker. Her family was always first and most important in her life. She was very family orientated. Irene also worked as a photographer for Haberman Photography, in the downtown bakery (where she met her husband). She also worked at the Annex of Warren Memorial Hospital. Irene helped Wes with his farm repair shop and custom farm work. Cooking was Irene's hobby and she enjoyed embroidering quilt blocks from which she made quilts for her grandchildren.Irene was a long-time member of the Friend United Methodist Church, receiving her 50-year pin on January 8, 1989. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, Friend Rebekah Lodge and the Royal Neighbors. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Arvon and Bonnie Engel, Greeley, CO, Dale and Betty Engel, Kalona, IA, daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Frank May, Omaha, four grandchildren and spouses, Rebecca and Ed Householder, Colorado Springs, CO, David and Ann Engel, Phoenix, AZ, Emily May, and David May, both of Omaha, four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Jennifer Householder, Ethan and Adam Engel, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. - She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wesley in 1988, two brothers, Clyde and Lloyd Gibson, and an infant brother, Leonard. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Friend with Rev. Tess Hufford officiating. Interment will be in Andrew Cemetery, Friend. Visitation will be Sunday 1-9 pm with family receiving friends from 2-4 p.m. at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Viewing also available 1 hour before services at the church. The organist, Charlene Huber, accompanied the soloist, Randy Kaliff, as he sang "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". The congregation joined Randy on the 2nd and 3rd verse of Amazing Grace.
