In Loving Memory Rev John "Jack" E. Scavo A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the Exeter United Church of Christ with Rev. Stuart A. Davis officiating. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 24, from noon - 8:00 p.m. with family greeting relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. A private family Inurnment will be at a later date in Andrew Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the UCC in Exeter. John Edwin "Jack" Scavo was born on March 16, 1929 in New York City, New York to Emmanuel William and Ina-Mae (Stevens) Scavo and went to his heavenly home on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, Nebraska at the age of 89 years 7 months and 3 days. As a young boy, he graduated with the class of 1947 from DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City and furthered his education with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Columbia University, New York City in 1953. Jack then attended the Hartford Seminary Foundation and received his Master of Divinity degree in May of 1956. On May 24, 1956, he was united in marriage to Susan Elizabeth Lane in Hartford, Connecticut. To this union a son, Steven William, and two daughters, Paula Jean and Carol Elizabeth were born. From 1948 to 1952, Jack was an active member of the National Guard 7th Reg., 107th Inf of New York City, New York. After their marriage, Rev. Jack and Sue made their home in Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts where one of his duties was to serve with the Holyoke, Massachusetts police department as a night minister. They moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1974 where he served the Vine Congregational Church and was later employed at the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Rev Jack was called to serve the United Church of Christ in Friend and Exeter in 1986 and they moved to Friend. After retirement from active ministry, Jack continued to serve many churches in the area as interim pastor. He had a very sharp mind and could quote many parts of the bible from memory and enjoyed lively discussions on most any topic. He is a member of the Exeter United Church of Christ and the UCC South Central Association which he has served in many capacities. He is a 30+ year member of the Friend Rotary Club and served on the Friend hospital board of directors. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #73 and American Legion Post #183, both of Friend. Jack was a member of the group responsible for getting the Saline County Transportation for the elderly started. In his spare time Jack was an avid golfer and bowler. He enjoyed photography, reading and music, and sports in general though in later years, he was more a spectator than a participator. Spending summers at Merepoint, Maine with his family, created many fond memories for all. Jack is survived by his wife, Susan E. Scavo, York, daughters and sons-in-law, Paula Jean and Terry Markuson, Omaha, Carol Elizabeth and David Piper, Hugoton, KS, son and daughter-in-law, Steven William and Brenda Scavo, York, foster daughter and son-in-law, Stefica "Stef" and John Ellis, Cumming, GA, 15 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Cynthia "Bunky" Ellis, Orono, ME, many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, George H. and Charlotte Lane, Charlotte and Ed Mack, John Ellis, Rev. Robert C. and Rev.
