M. Virginia Burns Obituary (1924

In Loving Memory Of Virginia Burns A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friend with Fr. Lawrence Stoley officiating. Visitation will be on Monday 10 am until 5 pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Friend. Memorials may be directed in care of the family for future designation. Mary "Virginia" Burns was born on the family farm north of Friend, December 25, 1924 to John and Helen (Kirwin) Burns the oldest of four children, and passed away, Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, Nebraska at the age of 92 years 5 months and 21 days. As a young girl, she grew up on the farm south Friend, later moving to a farm northwest of Friend. Virginia (as she was affectionately known) attended Country School District 56 near the south farm and graduated with the Class of 1943 from Friend High School. Virginia dedicated her life to education. She taught with a Normal Teaching certificate for two years at rural schools in Saline County before attending Kearney State Teachers College where she received her Bachelor's Degree. Virginia received her Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She taught at Mitchell and then McCook Public Schools. Virginia traveled to France and taught at an Air Force School in France, near Paris. She returned to Nebraska and taught in the Lincoln Public School system until she retired. Virginia was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary, all in Friend. As a young girl at home, she even taught her brothers and sister - always being the teacher and they her students. Virginia had a wonderful caring personality, always interested in the lives and accomplishments of her students and their families.She is survived by her brother, John "Jack" Burns, York, sister, Catherine Burns, Friend, eight nephews and nieces, Kevin Burns, York, Mary and David Doremus, Benedict, Dan and Dawn Burns, Yankton, SD, Patricia and Jeff White, Michael, Richard, Jim and Dina Burns, all of Omaha, Joe Burns, O'Fallon, MO, and many great and great-grand nieces and nephews.Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Maurice, two sisters-in-law, Leona Burns and Kathleen Burns, and two great-nephews, Timothy and Thomas Burns.
