In Loving Memory OfMarlen Hohnbaum Marlen William Hohnbaum, was born June 25, 1920 on a farm north of Friend, Nebraska to Harry and Anna (Matthiesen) Hohnbaum, 3rd of 4 children and passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Tabitha Nursing Home in Lincoln, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 5 days. As a young boy he attended country school District #23 near Friend and graduated from Friend High School with the class of 1938. He participated in high school basketball where his team competed at the state basketball tournament earning a state championship. Upon his graduation from high school he moved to Iowa near Grundy Center where he picked corn for area farmers. He was united in marriage to Anna Marie Johnson on September 20, 1944 in Friend, Nebraska at the Methodist Church and to this union two daughters were born. Together they farmed north of Friend until 1950 when they moved to the Beaver Crossing area where his farming included a dairy herd and raising sheep. When NC+ was started, Marley was one of the original dealers with the seed company. He operated a custom hay swathing business throughout Seward, York and Saline counties for many years. He served on the Beaver Crossing Coop board of directors, was a life-time member of the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church, a member of the Seward County Historical Society, and was a former member of the Flowing Well Grange in Beaver Crossing After Anna Marie died, he was united in marriage to Lois Biltoft Cast, a widow and neighbor. Lois brought seven adult children to the family. Marley and Lois enjoyed playing cards with several groups of friends whenever there was an opportunity. Marley and Lois attended every family activity they could and they thoroughly enjoyed the hours spent with their children, grandchildren, and extended family members. They also enjoyed several trips to every corner of the United States. One of Marley's favorite projects was the design and construction of their home south of Beaver Crossing. Left to mourn his passing are his daughters and spouses, Marilyn and Randy Kaliff, Utica; Leann and Steve Turner, Lincoln, step-sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Norma Cast, Milford; Larry and Beverly Cast, Grand Island; Wayne and Lisa Cast, Princeton, MO; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Marian and Alan Ruge, Panama, NE; Elaine and Ted Phillips, Beaver Crossing; step-sons-in-law, Bill Kunert, Milford; Lloyd Dawson and wife Betty, Bellvue; 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Hohnbaum, Richmond, CA, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Max and Marjorie Biltoft, Cocoa Beach, FL; Russell and Virginia Biltoft, Santa Clara, CA; many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anna Marie in 1975, second wife, Lois in 2008, sister, Martha Jensen, brothers, Myron and Roland Hohnbaum, step-daughters, Jean Kunert and Diane Dawson; brother-in-law, Charles Biltoft, sister-in-law, Ruby Smith. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 6, 2010, at the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church with Rev. Betsy Galloway-Carew officiating. Burial of Ashes at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday, 2-8 pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Beaver Crossing and one hour prior to service at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Aaron and Adam Kaliff, Jameson Turner and Eric Jensen, Dale Kunert, Douglas and David Cast, Ian and Alex Ruge, Neil and Paul Dawson, Lane and Eliot Phillips, Ethan Cast, Honorary Pallbearers are his granddaughters, Amanda Kaliff-Prior, Lauren Turner, Lori Hagemoser, Donna Winston, Karen Stoa, Debra Arens, Melissa Cast-Brede, Alicia Cast-Potoski, Shandra Cast, Adele Phillips, Sarah Cast, Molly Nunes, Emily Carlson. Donna Harding, organist, accompanied Randy Kaliff, vocalist as he sang "Going Home", and the congregation for the hymns of "How Great Thou Art", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Hymn of Promise".
