In Memory OfOris V. Williams A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Friend with Rev. Paixaio Baptista officiating. Cremation, no viewing, a register book will be available for signing at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend from 10am - 4 pm on Wednesday and Thursday and until service time on Friday. Inurnment will be in Blue Mound Cemetery, Milford with Military Services conducted by the US Army and Friend American Legion Post #183. Memorials have been established and are directed in care of the family for later designation. Oris V. Williams, 98, of Friend, died Sunday, February 11, 2018, at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln. He was born December 31, 1919, to Melvern and Lura Williams at the Hershberger House in Milford, Nebraska, the 6th of 10 children. As a young boy he attended and graduated with the Class of 1937 from Milford Public Schools. Oris participated in all sports, and excelled in ping pong, horseshoes and basketball, playing on the undefeated 1937 teams. On May 15, 1942, at Ft. Crook, Nebraska, he was inducted into the US Army during WWII and trained at Camp Barkley in Texas. Oris served overseas in England and was discharged on January 8, 1945 at Indian Town Gap in Pennsylvania as a sergeant. Basketball continued to be a part of his life, as he played on the undefeated "camp" team and when he was in London, played on an all-star exhibition team in London. Oris thanked God for surviving V-Day and the worst Buzz Bombing of London during the World War II, where a bomb had hit the building he was in and he was pinned down for 2 hours. After his discharge, he returned to Nebraska where he continued to play basketball and was a member of the team that won the Nebraska State tournament, 4 out of 5 years. He began working during high school, as a cash and carry boy at the Roll Grocery and Cold Storage in Milford and as a janitor at the Assembly of God Church. In 1936 he began his life-time career as a truck driver, driving for Roll Transfer in Milford. In 1937, he moved to Scottsbluff as an employee of North Western Sugar Company during the harvest season, and drove a truck until his induction into the army. Returning from his service during WWII, he bought Roll Transfer and changed the name to Diamond Freightways, moving the business to Friend. In 1972, he sold out to Graves Truck Lines and remained as the Terminal Manager, continuing through a transfer to ANR Freight System. In 1983, he retired and enjoyed playing golf and spending time with family and friends. He took his golf seriously, and was able to shoot his age the last 3 or 4 years of his life! He was united in marriage to Phyllis Mae Rumler, on October 3, 1945 at Lebanon, PA and to this union, a daughter, Linda, and a son, Dan were born. Shortly after their marriage, Oris and Phyllis moved to Friend where they remained and were active members of the community. He was a member of the Friend United Methodist Church, Friend American Legion Post #183, Friend Chamber of Commerce, also the former Friend Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Motor Carriers, and served two terms on the Friend City Council (one as President), a charter member of the Friend Country Club, serving two terms on the board of directors. He was formerly a member of Milford Assembly of God Church. Oris is survived by his daughter, Linda Free, Lincoln, three grandchildren, Shane and Jeanie Rodie, Hoisington, KS, April Dixon, Lincoln, Amber Crouse, Lincoln, six great-grandchildren, Stormy Crisman, Reason Crisman, Alex Crouse, Kinison Crisman, Talon Crouse and Eian Dixon, nine great-great-grandchildren, brothers and sister-in-law, Calvin "Tipp" and Patsy Williams, Visalia, CA, Ron Williams, Nevada, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 2006, his son Dan in 2008, parents, Melvern and Lura Williams, brothers, Melvern Williams, Orville Williams, Don Williams, sisters, Veda Lamar, Vida Roll, Velda Wolfe and Velma Conkling, and his parents-in-law.
